With the Forza 3 demo out today, we thought it would be interesting to see how it compared to the most recent HD offering from the Gran Turismo franchise, GT5: Prologue.
In order to make the test as fair as possible, we’ve used two cars which feature in both Prologue and the Forza 3 demo, the Mitsubishi Evo X and the Audi R8. And yes, we know Forza 3 has a slightly different version of the R8 to Prologue – they’re still similar enough.
And the results speak for themselves. Forza 3 clearly manages to pack in much more trackside detail than Prologue can; but Prologue is much more polished, and hence, more pleasing to the eye.
The colours are much more subtle, and the shading and lighting gives Prologue’s cars a smoother and more realistic appearance. Even the driver modelling and animation is better in Prologue – even though this doesn’t quite come through in the shots.
What’s also clear when seeing both in motion is how much smoother Prologue is. Everything in Forza 3 is much more jagged than Prologue, to the point where some shimmering can be noticed in the 360 game.
Obviously, Forza 3 makes up for this somewhat by packing in much more detail. But then, Polyphony’s had two years to tinker with its game engine – so don’t be surprised if GT5’s courses are crammed with trackside detail when it’s released.
UPDATE: reader Flanker22 has submitted some heavily annotated versions of two original screenshots. Worth looking at for a different perspective on what's on show.

But honestly, there's no body of historical data to indicate that a gt game could get delayed.

but after actually checking the interiors do have some detail. in the ferrari california you can make out the ferrari horse on the steering wheel, the ac vents in the center console, the same with the r8, mini. the lancer you can barely make out the center console its much darker than other cars interiors. its just a matter of getting enough light into the cars. (mountain shadows and dark reflections make it difficult to see)

Turn10 have said, that cars will be teen time's more detailed form forza2, too bad it is only markering, because actual gameplay models are low poly.

The one thing which is bugging me with GT5 though is the observed 'film grain' effect.
Also, guy who made the annotations expresses clear bias. Pointing out '2D trees' on GT5 and not making the same observation within Forza, where the same are present too. As if suggesting GT5 can't render a singular tree.
But eh, as someone else has said we need to see the two in motion to make a proper comparison. Although you can expect GT5 to look a little better on release.
