Tekken 6 - PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360 comparison

Comparison: Tekken 6 - PlayStation 3 vs Xbox 360

As some of you may know by now, Tekken 6 is a bit of a rare case of trading off one graphical enhancement against the other.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game enable gamers to select whether or not they want a complimentary blur effect initiated to create an illusion of more fluid animation, or some sort anti-aliasing technique, which, in the case of Xbox 360, isn't AA at all, but an upwards internal resolution boost to 1365x768, that when shrunk down to 1280x720 in the output and display process, produces a sort of AA-like smoothing effect.

When in Blur mode 'on', the Xbox 360 version internally renders at a sub-720p 1024x576 resolution, which is the same resolution the PS3 version runs in both modes.

So what we have for you are galleries showing how each versions fares in the respective modes.

Below are the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions going head to head in Blur mode 'off'. So to clarify, this is the PS3's sub HD resolution with anti-aliasing taking on the 360's higher internal resolution downsampled to mimic AA. Which one looks better?

Oddly, not what you'd expect. While they do look practically identical (good, considering they use different techniques to reach an end result), the PS3 version looks slightly better in terms of graphical fidelity and detail, despite the 360's resolution boost. Very odd indeed, so the 360 is losing something somewhere.

As for which mode we prefer... the game does look smoother with the motion blur on (as is the intention), but it's much jaggier. You don't notice jaggies too much, but that said, once you have noticed it and the shimmering that goes with it, it's hard to ignore. The PS3 version of the Blur mode 'off' looks better, so this is the best way to play technically, but doesn't look as smooth. Decisions... the fact is, if you want smoothness, you need the blur on and it doesn't matter which version you buy. If you're going to turn blur off to eliminate jaggies, PS3's the one to go for.

As ever, give us your thoughts below. Try to keep them on-topic and relevant. Any fanboy nonsense, accusations of bias or comments moaning about comparisons in general will be deleted.
